Change the Engine Air Filter in Your Car
A start-to-finish walkthrough of swapping a dirty engine air filter — locating the housing, releasing the clips, and seating the new filter the right way round.
Steps
- 1
Pop the hood and find the air filter housing — the black plastic box on the intake side of the engine bay.
- 2
Release the metal clips around the edge of the housing lid.
- 3
Lift the lid and set it aside without straining the intake hose.
- 4
Pull out the old filter and note which way round it sits in the box.
- 5
Check the housing is clear before the new filter goes in.
- 6
Drop the new filter in facing the same direction, seated flat in its groove.
- 7
Refit the lid and snap the clips back down.
